About Rotherham

Because much of its architecture was demolished during the 20th century, central Rotherham has a modern, airy feel.

This said, there are still one or two historic structures dotted around the town: the 'Chapel of the Bridge' is a 15th century church (one of a few in Rotherham) that, at one time, would charge people crossing the bridge a toll; the 18th century Clifton House, a country manor house with many acres of grounds that is now the home of the Clifton Park Museum; the Rotherham Art Gallery showcases both local and international creative talent with its eclectic collections; the history of the local regiment, and that of the last two hundred years of warfare in general are retold at the York and Lancaster Regimental Museum.

For those of a sporting nature, Rotherham has lots to offer aside from the usual leisure centres and swimming pools. Owing to its beautiful surroundings the area is ideal for walking, cycling and even horse riding, and golfers are also very well catered for locally.

Since the early 90's Rotherham has developed something of a name for itself as a destination for clubbers, with a large number of venues to choose from.

In the town centre there is a veritable glut of nightclubs, all concentrated in a small area, and these are now frequented by clubbers from miles around.

If a more peaceful night out is more your cup of tea, then 'The Bistro Boat' might appeal: a converted narrowboat that sails the river Don offering gourmet food and drink and even live entertainment.
