Situated between Sheffield and Doncaster in the Don valley, the Yorkshire town of Rotherham is home to nearly 250,000 people.
In its formative years the town made its name on the back of local iron ore - Rotherham iron was renowned for its strength - but, with the closure of the massive Templeborough steel works in 1993, the area had to find new means of survival.
Now Rotherham is more of a tourist destination than an industrial town, surrounded by some of the finest countryside in the land and, as such, offers miles of footpath, wildflower meadows and restored canal network.
In terms of retail therapy, the pedestrianised town centre that surrounds Rotherham Parish Church has all the major high street names, alongside independent traders, a myriad of bars and restaurants and even several outdoor markets.
